One thing has been bugging me lately....

We all know that when someone breaks a promise, it usually ends us bad.

My question is, what happens when you break a promise that you made to yourself?

confused

Well, in my opinion if u break a promise given 2 urself it usually means dat ur priorities have changed & da things dat mattered 2 u b4 became less important. In dat case ain't nothin wrong wit it: life is alwayz about changes.

In any way, I think there's no use crying over spilt milk. I know that feeling. I think it would be better for the person try to find outside help.

I consider no point to promise anything... Promising smth is the way to persuade ourselves that we are stronger than we are. Quite a bad kind of motivation. It's better to start to do something, lets say because we like it or we love someone we are doing it for. Promisses... we always break them and feeling is terrible - you stop respecting yourself. It's better not to promise anything at all - that gives the feeling of freedom. Then if situation changes we won't blame ourselves for something what is not necessary any more. Sure some promises are necessary (for instance wedding promises) just the idea is to keep the number of promises and oaths as small as possible to be able to remember those you've given. smile

"I won't think about this today I will think about this tomorrow!" If you take the breaking of a promise as a disaster, it can even lead you to depression! You experience deep emotional and negative feelings,,you think that everything is your fault, You can't control every situation, not everything is within our abilities. Your opinion, mood, importance all can change! So no crying rivers here,,it won't help!

I know that it doesnt help to think about it all the time...but what if the promise that you made stands for something that you believe in with all your heart? What if that promise makes you who you truly are? Does that mean that you were not careful enough and let your guard down, or that you just had a change of hearts?

We are humans, and we always make mistakes, we should try to learn on our mistakes and try to correct them. Just stop worrying and take it as lesson. And will be better if you try not to make promises, bcs you never know what may happen in the future .

I got the definition of "promise" from wikipedia:

"A promise (also called troth) is a psychological contract indicating a transaction between two persons whereby the first person undertakes in the future to render some service or gift to the second person or devotes something valuable now and here to his or her use. A promise may also refer to any kind of vow or guarantee.

Promises and religions

Religions have differing attitudes towards promises.

Christianity
Main article: Oath
In Christianity, a distinction is made between simple promises and oaths/vows, with only the latter being seen as involving God, either as witness to the promise or recipient of it, although God sees the simple promises too.
The act of making a solemn oath may be done on one's own, but certain oaths or vows, especially when it affects a person's vocation in life and role in the community, are made publicly, and before a priest or public official. A Christian who makes an oath to God is responsible for it, not to the peril of his soul, but as a sin if he breaks it.
Certain sects of Western Christianity, amongst them the Religious Society of Friends and the Mennonites, object to the taking of both oaths and affirmations, basing their objections upon a commandment given in the Sermon on the Mount, and regard all promises to be witnessed by God.

Islam
Before the life, spirits of all people has promised Allah that they would accept Tawheed, if they are sent to the Earth. Ones who accept that will go to Jannah and ones who break their promises will go to Jahannam. However, Allah forbids all people who turns back to Islam, which they are born with it. In An-Nahl 91, Allah forbids Muslims to break their promises after they have confirmed them. All promises are regarded as having Allah as their witness and guarantor. In a Hadith, Muhammed states that a Muslim who made a promise and then saw a better thing to do, should do the better thing and then make an act of atonement for breaking the promise."

After reading this, I got an idea that when people lived under religious rules every aspect of life was covered by religion and everybody was supposed to promise to follow the religion. Therefore they didn't have to make other promises.

hazel_eyes, Wikipedia is implementing a new procedure. Now the changes will be reviewed by a special committee within a week, then they will appear there. smile

Hm, I concur with Silent_Guardian on many aspects of his statement, however I find it difficult not to promise myself anything. When you're promising yourself something, you're determining the goal that should be achieved. When you break your promise, it would mean or what Chicana_Luv said - changing of prioritities, or what I say - eventually we understand that we are too weak to accomplish a promise given to ourselves.
Since in our daily lives it is not so easy not to give promises, I prefer to double-think afore promising to somebody anything, balancing all 'for' and 'against' and only then I conclude. The truth is that if we cannot accomplish promises to ourselves, there is a high possibility that we wouldn't accomplish promises to other people.
Think about that, folk! icecream
